History:
Originally built in the 11th century on the grounds of an ancient Roman temple, Viseu Cathedral first began as a small Benedictine Monastery until the 12th century when it was transformed into a cathedral by Archbishop Dona María. Over the next several centuries the cathedral underwent various renovations and additions. In 2004, the cathedral was designated as a National Monument in recognition for its significance in Portuguese history and culture. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.

Viseu Cathedral is notable for its Romanesque-Gothic architecture and its many Baroque and Rococo-style interior decorations. The Baroque-influenced façade was added during the 17th century and is flanked by two impressive bell towers. Inside, visitors can admire a stunning central portion of the cathedral featuring a main altar and intricate marble altar pieces.

The cathedral remains in use today and regularly offers services including Baptisms, First Communions, Weddings and Funerals. Visitors are welcome to attend the cathedral's services to enjoy beautiful liturgies and a solemn atmosphere.
