São Francisco Church In Portugal: History,Facts, & Services
History:
The original structure of São Francisco Church was constructed in 1766. The original structure was destroyed in a fire in 1817 and was rebuilt to the same plans using varzea stone mined from Ouro Preto. The reconstructed facade was completed in 1818 and features two bell towers and two niches. In 1870, the stairs were gold plated with a gift from Empress Teresa Cristina. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.

The church features two bell towers, two niches, and a large golden staircase. The bell towers are made from varzea stone and are decorated with reliefs of angels and cherubim. The inside of the church has a single nave, a high barrel ceiling and a massive altarpiece. The altar holds several statues of Franciscan saints.
Services:
Services are held on Sundays, Holy Days, and during special occasions. Mass is held seven times a day and visitors are encouraged to attend. Other services offered include Sacraments, Confessions, and Benedictions. There is also a museum at the church which displays religious artifacts, paintings, and sculptures. The museum and courtyard are open to the public throughout the year.This beautiful church in Portugal has made a lot of significance in the past.
