History:
The church was built in the early 14th Century, in the Gothic architectural style. The church was originally built as a Franciscan Friary, which included a convent and other monastery buildings. For centuries, it was an important site for prayer and worship, both for laypeople and members of the Franciscan order. In the 18th century, the church underwent several renovations and changes, including the introduction of Baroque-style tiles and stained-glass windows. The renovations and additions transformed the church’s interior into a more contemporary, yet still traditional, appearance. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.

Santo Antão Church is one of the oldest churches in Lisbon and is a major tourist attraction. It is a protected National Monument and is the only Gothic-style church remaining in the city. The church features a beautiful rose window, impressive stone buttresses, and a bell tower. Inside, visitors can admire the large stained-glass windows and the granite confessional and pulpit. The church also features several statues and artwork, and contains a reliquary containing the relics of Saint Anthony, the founder of the Franciscan order and the patron saint of Portugal.

The church is an active parish church and holds several weekly services, including Mass and Vespers. The church is also a popular site for pilgrimages, weddings, special services, and other religious ceremonies.
