History:
The church was designed by famous Portuguese engineer Bernardo Crespo, who outlined its spectacular facade with a combination of classical and baroque elements. It was built on the site of a 15th-century temple and some of its architectural features have survived, such as the romanesque gate. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.

The Igreja de Santiago has two bell towers, with a height of 60m. The bell towers are a historical landmark and were named after two Portuguese explorers, D. Afonso de Albuquerque and D. Francisco de Almeida, who sailed for India in the 1500s. The church also houses wooden sculptures of 14 Portuguese saints and religious figures, beautiful azulejos (Portuguese tile-work), and the stately Organ from 1773.

The church offers regular mass services in Portuguese, as well as several cultural activities throughout the year, such as concerts, visual arts exhibitions, and other events.
