It is a National Monument of Portugal and serves as both a place of worship and a museum. The chapel dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, when it served as an important spiritual and political landmark for both Castle Pederneira and the municipality of Pederneira. The church contains numerous ancient artifacts and furnishings, including a Baroque altarpiece, an ornate ceiling, and a magnificent pipe organ. It is one of the best churches in Portugal which you must visit.

History:

The Church of Mercy of Pederneira was built under the direction of João Manoel da Rocha, the Count of Pederneira, in the mid-16th century. It was erected on the site of a much older, 13th-century church, the ruins of which can still be seen today. The church was built in the Elizabethen style, with a barrel vaulted ceiling and an ornately carved altarpiece. It was enlarged in the late 17th century, when a large pipe organ was installed. In the 18th century, the church underwent extensive renovations, including the addition of a choir loft. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.
