History
The initial building of the church dates back to 1676 and was built in honor of Our Lady of the Light to commemorate a miraculous escape from a siege on the city by the Spanish forces of Almanzor in 1151. The church was initially known as Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Luz.
The present-day structure was built in the late 19th century and is an example of baroque architecture, consisting of three portals, two bell towers and two domes.
