Basilica of Our Lady of the Martyrs In Portugal: History,Facts, & Services

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Martyrs is a Roman Catholic shrine located in Auriesville, New York. The basilica was founded in 1959 by Archbishop Edward John Adams and is dedicated to the eight martyrs of North America. Located on a hilltop overlooking the Mohawk River Valley, it is one of the principal pilgrimage spots in the United States. The chapel contains a replica of the grisly Cross of the Martyrs, which stands over the site of the martyrdoms of 1642—the Native American converts who were killed by their Mohawk captors. The basilica also houses numerous relics and artifacts related to these dedicated men and women, as well as those of the Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, a 17th-century Mohawk woman, who was canonized in 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.
