Wat Phuok Phan Tong is a 500-year-old Thai temple located near the city of Chiang Rai, in northern Thailand. It is one of the most historically and spiritually significant temples in the country, reputed for its beautiful murals, abundant plants, and peaceful atmosphere.

Wat Phuok Phan Tong is recognized for its unique interlinked structures and old-world grandeur. The temple is surrounded by a quincunx of buildings, including the main shrine, bell tower, and an open-air gazebo, which are considered a representation of the five Buddhas of mindfulness. A large wooden ceiling featuring an intricate lacquered mural of Naga gods adorns the inner shrine, while outside, more than 300 clay sculptures stand in silent contemplation.
Facts:

Wat Phuok Phan Tong was originally built in the Pakam district in the early 16th century, although the archaeological evidence suggests that it was likely constructed much earlier. Its name roughly translates to “City of the Five Seals”, which is thought to refer to the five Buddhas of mindfulness that adorn the inner-shrine ceiling. The temple is also known for its large gate, believed to have been carved from a single piece of teak.
History:

According to historical records, the temple was created and old by the first king of Chiang Rai, Chiang Saen. In the 17th century, the temple was built and rebuilt by King Naresuan and King Khela. The elaborate buildings, sculptures, and murals of Wat Phuok Phan Tong are all credited to these two rulers.
Travel:

Wat Phuok Phan Tong is located in the Chiang Rai province of northern Thailand, and can be reached easily by car. The temple is open to visitors from 8 AM to 6 PM every day. A small fee is charged for admission into the temple grounds.
