History:

The Manila Cathedral was originally constructed as the Parish of Nuestra Señora de la Immaculada Concepcion in 1571. The first structure, a fortress-like structure with a rectangular layout made of hardwood, was destroyed by a fire in 1583. In 1586, a new stone and mortar church was built on the site with the approval of Archbishop Sancho de Mello and it has since served as the premier church of Manila. The church was later destroyed by natural disasters and rebuilt several times, including rebuilds in 1740, 1762, and 1958. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Philippines.
