The church was built in the 7th century, and is one of the oldest churches in the area. It is also an officially consecrated religious site. It is one of the best churches in Palestine which you must visit.

History:

The church was built in the early 7th century, by a group of Maronite monks from the Middle East who had fled from the Islamic invasion of their homeland. They settled in a small village near Jerusalem, and decided to build a church dedicated to Our Lady, the mother of Jesus. All the Maronites in the area began to worship here, and the small village developed over the years into a thriving community. The Maronite Church of Our Lady in Palestine has had a tumultuous history. During the Crusader period, it was significantly enlarged, but the Muslims retook it in 1187. The church was then annexed by the Ottoman Turks in 1517, and it has retained its Ottoman architecture until the present day. For centuries, it was the only Maronite church in Jerusalem, until a second church was opened in the same vicinity in 1867. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Palestine.
