Church of St. Mary of agony In Palestine is one of the oldest churches in Palestine and it is located in the very center of Jerusalem, near the Christian Quarter. The Church is also known as the Church of All Nations and is believed to date back to the 4th century AD. This Church is believed to have been built over the site of a 1st century CE house, which legend holds was the home of the Virgin Mary’s parents, Sts. Joachim and Anne. History According to tradition, the Church of All Nations was founded by the Empress Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, in the 4th century. It is said that St. Helena found a limestone rock with a hole on it and inside was an image of the Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus. Helena then built a church over the rock, dedicating it to St Mary of Agony. The Church was extensively renovated in the 15th century and then again in 1872 when it was substantially rebuilt, although preserving some of the original elements. Today, visitors can still see the 4th-century arches that are located beneath the main altar. Facts The church has an impressive interior decorated with numerous paintings and ancient religious artifacts. One of its most distinctive features is the façade adorned with the flags of all nations, representing their commitment to Christ and His teachings. The church is famous for its large fresco painting of the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, as well as for its breathtaking cycloramic view of Jerusalem’s ancient cityscape.
