St John In The Wilderness Monastery in Palestine is an ancient monastic site located in a secluded valley close to the West Bank, just outside the village of Battir. This monastery has been in existence since the 5th century and is still an active place of worship. Historians believe that a hermit named John the Baptist is responsible for building this shrine. The monastery traditionally holds celebrations of the Prophet Solomon’s Throne/Bema every July. The monastery is well known for its beautiful stone churches and is home to beautiful frescoes depicting stories of the life of St. John the Baptist and the history of the monastic community that has existed at the site for centuries. It is also well known for its unique wooden front door which is said to have been carved in the 4th century by St. Pericles. St. John of The Wilderness is also widely known for its sycamore tree, which is said to have been located within the monastery’s walls during the time of Jesus. The monastery mainly provides religious services to pilgrims and members of the local community, but it has also recently started to offer hospitality services to visitors as well as housing and services for people suffering from mental or physical conditions that have arisen from war and conflict.
