Brief History:
The Al Qalhat North Central Mosque is the oldest mosque in Oman and was built in the 14th century. Located in Al Qalat, it was built during the ruling era of the Nasir Bin Muhammad tribe in the early 1300s. The mosque is constructed in an old-style Omani design, and is renowned for its unique traditional wood carvings. It is the only mosque in Al Qalat still in use today, and has been the spiritual center for nearby villagers for centuries. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Al Qalhat North Central Mosque is an example of traditional Omani architecture. The mosque structure is built of rounded and flat mud blocks, and features a wooden roof and plastered walls. The building is symmetrical and features four minarets, a dome, and a portico. Inside the mosque, the main prayer hall is flanked by two spacious courtyards, and features a mihrab and minbar. Also inside the mosque are ablution facilities and traditional windows. The mosque is decorated with elegant stucco carvings, which feature geometric and epigraphic patterns of calligraphy and floral designs. As a symbol of Islamic culture and architecture, the Al Qalhat North Central Mosque is a testament to the historical richness of Oman. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
