Brief History:
The Al Qalhat East Mosque in Oman, first constructed in 790 (1776 AD), is one of the oldest and most significant mosques in the Middle East. The mosque is located in the eastern part of Al Qalhat city, near the pier. It is a majestic structure made of limestone, which has a number of minarets and an interior courtyard. The mosque is a spiritual symbol of the strong faith of the people in the region and also serves as a friendly meeting place for the local community. The mosque houses the Musabba’a, a Quranic school, and a historic library. For many years, the mosque has been a stronghold of moderate and tolerant Islam. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Al Qalhat East Mosque in Oman is a traditional 15th century mosque constructed using local stone and mud materials. The mosque has a square-shaped plan with a central courtyard and a single minaret located at the eastern side. The main entrance is located in the center of the southern side. The mosque also features a horseshoe-shaped mihrab, a niche that indicates the direction of the qibla (direction of prayer). The design of the mosque represents the traditional style of architecture of the region which is characterized by its simplicity and minimal ornamentation. The interior of the mosque consists of a series of narrow columns with small arches, the walls and floors are painted with geometric designs. The ceiling is supported by small wooden beams which are decorated with intricate carvings. The mosque also has several windows that provide natural light. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
Visiting Hours:
Visiting hours at the Al Qalhat East Mosque in Oman are from 10AM to 8PM daily. The mosque is closed on Fridays, so no visiting is allowed on that day. best mosque in the world.
