Brief History:
: Al Khuwayr East North Mosque is a historic mosque located in the city of Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman. It was first built in the mid 15th century by the Bahla tribe. The mosque was later renovated by Sultan Sayyid Said bin Sultan in 1864. This mosque is also known as the two-domed mosque due to its two minarets. The mosque is constructed with coral stones and is covered with plaster and white ochre. During the restoration in 1950s, beautiful paintings depicting Arabic calligraphy were added to the walls and roofs. The mosque has an area for ablution and a room where ladies pray separately. The mosque also has two large yards and many shops selling books and religious artifacts. This mosque is an important place of worship for Muscat locals and visitors alike. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Al Khuwayr East North Mosque has an Indo- Islamic-style architecture, featuring a traditional square prayer hall with an octagonal-shaped dome and four minarets. The mosque is constructed of whole cut stone with intricate patterns carved along its walls and columns. The facades of the building feature strips of brown jalousie windows, silhouetted against the white of the walls. The most prominent feature of the mosque is a 32 m high minaret, which stands proudly as the centrepiece of the building. The interior of the building is decorated with brightly coloured tiles and intricate black and gold mouldings. A unique feature of the Al Khuwayr East North Mosque is the installation of the four minarets that stand at each corner of the building. They are decorated with intricate geometric designs and are undercut with a combination of central, spandrel and star frets. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
