Brief History:
Al Qabil Central Mosque is located in the city of Quriyat, close to the northern coast of Oman. It is the biggest and most important mosque in Oman, and one of the oldest. It has been around since the 8th century and was constructed initially by the Arabs, who then passed it on to the Ottomans who added on the existing foundations and structures. The current form of the mosque is a combination of both Arab and Ottoman architecture and design. It now covers an area of around 3,000 square metres and has a large courtyard, with sculptures and inscriptions from the Prophet Mohammed's life. The mosque also has several prayer halls, a library, and a grand dome. The mosque is always filled with worshippers and visitors, and prayers are often held here on Fridays and during special occasions. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Al Qabil Central Mosque in Oman is characterized by a contemporary Islamic architectural style that is both minimalistic and opulent. Its exterior is characterized by a white dome with golden detailing and four symmetrical minarets. The facades are decorated with intricate geometric patterns and the windows have flowing masharabiya, traditional Islamic decoration. Inside, the mosque contains a large central prayer hall which is surrounded by an intricate geometric pattern of arches and columns. The domed ceilings are decorated with Islamic calligraphy and blue and gold glass tiles. The entrance to the mosque is marked by a large cast iron gate and a marble tiled courtyard.
