Brief History:
: Al Manuma South Central Mosque is a 17th century mosque located in Salalah, the capital city of the Governorate of Dhofar, Sultanate of Oman. The mosque was built by the then Governor of Dhofar, Sultan bin Habib Al Manasir in 1676. It was used by the local people for worship and was a venue for their events such as marriages and local celebrations. The mosque was also a symbol of religious belief and the faith of its people. The mosque was destroyed in the early 19th century, rebuilt later that century and remained in use until 1973, when it was again destroyed. The reconstruction of Al Manuma South Central Mosque is now complete and it is once again open for public visits. The mosque is an architectural masterpiece and is an excellent example of traditional Arab-Islamic architecture. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.
Architecture:
Located in Seeb, Oman, the Al Manuma South Central Mosque was constructed in 2016. The mosque was designed by the internationally renowned architectural firm Aedas of Dubai and sits on a 2,012 square meter plot. The Mosque is composed of a large 2-storey main prayer hall and a smaller mosque adjacent to it. The design follows the principles of Islamic architecture, with grand interiors, high pillars, and arched windows. On the exterior, the building is dressed with local stone materials such as pink limestone, coral stone and abu- albinvfah in vibrant and vivid colors which are inspired by traditional Islamic art. The main architectural feature of the mosque is the grand dome which rises 18 meters in diameter which is adjoined by a metal onion dome and two minarets flanking each end. As you enter the mosque, you come across a series of arches which lead you into the grand hall. The central prayer hall is spacious and incorporates Islamic decorations such as intricate carvings, niches, and mihrabs. The mosque is surrounded by a circular fountain, lush gardens, and ample parking for visitors. To reduce environmental footprint, the mosque has incorporated environmentally-friendly features like a solar panel system to generate electricity. The mosque is a beautiful example of contemporary Islamic Architecture and was awarded the award for Best Mosque in the Middle East at the World Architecture Festival 2016. Visiting Hours:
Al Manuma South Central Mosque in Muscat, Oman is open to visitors from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm daily, excluding Friday. On Fridays, the visiting hours are from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. All visitors are required to maintain a respectful and dignified behavior at all times. The mosque has certain regulations for women visitors and visitors who are not of the Muslim faith. Women are required to cover their heads, arms, and legs with clothing and wrap a scarf around their heads. The Al Manuma South Central Mosque is located in the south-central region of Oman, in the city of Al Manuma. The mosque is located near the Muscat International Airport, and is easily accessible by public transportation. The closest bus stop is located at the Al Manuma Commercial Centre which is a short 10-minute walk away from the mosque. The closest Metro Station is also located at the Al Manuma Commercial Centre, which can be accessed via the Line 2 train and is a 20-minute ride away from the mosque. The mosque is open daily for visitors, from 6am – 6pm. The mosques have a designated prayer hall for all of the sects that visit it, and the main prayer hall is shared between all of them.
