The Al Suwayh East South Mosque is an ancient structure found in Sur, Oman and is considered to be the largest and most beautiful of all the mosques in the country. The building is dated back to the 8th century and is of the Aur Marfat architecture style. This style is well known throughout the Arabian Peninsula with its recognizable features, most of which can be found in Al Suwayh East South Mosque, such as its large enclosed courtyards, its filigree ornaments, its double or triple porticoes in the center and the four front iwans. In the courtyard, one of the most recognizable elements is the prayer dome that is located on the east side of the courtyard. This prayer dome stands 11 meters above the ground and consists of 56 small brick arches that form the shell of the dome. Another noteworthy feature of the mosque is that its walls, gates and minarets are made of reinforced concrete, a material that was rarely used in the 8th century. From the outside, the building looks like a single structure, but inside it consists of three separate halls. Inside the main prayer hall, you can find the pulpit and the mihrab – a niche indicating the direction of the qibla or the direction of Mecca.
