The mosque was built in the mid-18th century and is one of the oldest mosques in Muscat. It was built by Imam Sultan bin Saif al-Ya'rubi, the 3rd Imam of the Ya'rubid Dynasty of Imams who governed Oman from the late 17th to late 19th century. The mosque underwent renovation and was reopened in 2006. The main prayer hall of the mosque has been renovated to an almost modern and eye-catching design and its overall architectural style is quite unique in Muscat. The mosque also offers a separate women's section. It is a popular and well-frequented place of prayer. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Al Ghubrah South East Central Mosque, located in Muscat, Oman, was completed in 2017. Its design was inspired by Omani and Islamic architectural styles and was built with some of the highest-quality materials and technologies available. The mosque is shaped like a horseshoe and is surrounded by a high wall. There are two entrances with grand staircases leading to a grand courtyard. Within the grounds is a beautiful internal garden, which is surrounded by four minarets and two gatehouses. The traditional style minarets are adorned with unique Islamic designs and patterns, and are illuminated by a full moon-shaped chandelier. The main building of the Mosque is a 72-meter rectangular prayer hall, which can accommodate up to 2,500 worshippers. It contains six classrooms and a designated women’s pray area. The interior of the prayer hall is decorated with elaborate Islamic decoration and a magnificent main prayer niche (Mihrab). The main dome is 20 meters high and is covered in intricate carvings and inter-twining geometric patterns. The mosque is also encircled by a ribbon of art, following traditional Islamic abstract patterns, as well as traditional Omani designs. It is also home to a state-of-the-art audio system and multi-media system to enhance worship and educational activities. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
