Brief History:
Al Jifnain North Central East South Mosque is a centuries old mosque located in the wilayat of Samail. Built in the middle of the 16th century, under the reign of the Ya`aruba Dynasty, the mosque shows many authentic architectural features from the period that still remain intact. The mosque stands out as one of the oldest mosques in the region due to its unique design and size. Not only is the mosque a popular pilgrimage site, but it is also well known for its religious importance. The mosque houses many valuable manuscripts, including the Quran and several commentaries on the Quran, by renowned scholars such as Sheikh Abdurrahman ibn `Abdullah al-`Alawi and Sheikh Abdurrahman ibn Muhammed al-Ba`ali. Furthermore, there are inscriptions notated in the limestone walls of the mosque which shed light on the culture and history of the region. The mosque is characterised by its four walls that point in the four directions – north, south, east, west – and it often referred to as “Al Jifnain”, meaning “four walls” in Arabic. The Al Jifnain North Central East South Mosque is an architectural gem of Oman, located in the town of Al Jifnain in Muscat Governorate. It is a beautifully crafted mosque incorporating both modern and traditional Omani elements. The building is mainly built in a traditional Omani style, with its high walls, curved clay-covered dome and the arched wooden entrance doors, while having a distinct contemporary feature in its soaring minarets. The mosque consists of four separate prayer halls. The main prayer hall is a large, 6-sided area with a large, circular dome, which is around 20 meters in diameter. This is the central point of the mosque and from here visitors can look out at the domes and towers of the surrounding buildings of the region. There are also four smaller prayer halls which line the north, east, south and west sides of the main prayer hall. Each of these smaller prayer rooms is around 5 meters in diameter and is adorned with elegant chandeliers and lush carpets. The mosque also features a large, open courtyard which is the main gathering place for worshippers before and after prayer. This hall is surrounded with sleek columns and arches, and also has a number of small, arched windows steps which lead up to the domed roof, giving the courtyard a palace-like feel. There is also a fountain at the center of the courtyard, making it a nice place to relax before prayer. The materials used in building this mosque are mainly traditional. The traditional construction elements of the mosque include white stone walls, domes of local pine wood, and cedar wood doors. The modern elements of the structure include its tall minarets, arched windows and concrete pathways. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
