Brief History:

Al-Khaboorah Mosque, located in the town of Bahla in the Al Dhahirah Governorate, is one of the oldest mosques in Oman. Built in the early 17th century, it is believed to have been constructed by the Imam Sultan Bin Saif, the first Imam of Oman. The Al-Khabooh Mosque in Oman is a unique structure that is reflective of the local Omani culture. The mosque is built on an elevated platform of polished white marble and is characterized by a linear massing of alternating pyramid-shaped and flat roof forms. The perimeter walls of the mosque are traditional, with the traditional ‘mashrabiyyah’ – the wooden lattice screens used to protect mosques and other structures from the sun and heat – creating simple, layered shadows on the walls. The walls are ornamented with intricate plaster carvings and arabesques and the mosque is topped with a central domed roof. Inside, visitors are greeted by a large central prayer hall. This hall is characterized by rows of wooden arches carved with intricate Islamic arabesques and geometric designs. At the very center of the mosque is the mihrab – an arched niche that marks the point of direction towards Mecca. The mihrab is encased in intricate plaster carvings and adorned with hanging lights. Additionally, the mosque features a traditional minbar – a platform where the sermon is delivered – and two small kiosks on either side which serve as libraries and storage for books and other religious artifacts.
