Al Awabi Mosque is an iconic symbol of traditional Islamic architecture. Built in the 16th century by the Sultan of Oman, the marble-clad mosque stands tall above the picturesque town of Al Awabi in Northern Oman. The most striking feature of the mosque is its minarets, which stand tall and majestic against the backdrop of the mosque’s stark white stonework. The two marble minarets, each standing at close to 25 metres, are crafted in traditional Ottoman and Moorish styles, and bear intricate carvings of the 99 attributes of Allah. Inside, an impressive arched dome made entirely of white marble dominates the prayer hall. Its beautiful geometry and intricate detailing are an example of some of the finest examples of Islamic architectural design. At the forefront of the prayer hall is the central mihrab which is intricately decorated with gold inscriptions and Islamic calligraphy. The mosque also contains two large niches in the northwest and southeast walls which were traditionally used to house the Quran. The Al Awabi Mosque is open to visitors from 7am to 8pm seven days a week. Visitors must abide by the dress code, which includes wearing long trousers or a long skirt, and covering your shoulders, arms and legs. Headscarves are required for women.
