Al Ashkharah East Central Mosque is the largest mosque in Oman. It was built in 1989 and holds up to 40,000 worshippers. The mosque is built mainly in the traditional Omani architectural style, with a large, single dome supported by four large minarets. The walls are decorated with cushy pillows, oriental carpets, and Islamic calligraphy. Inside, the Mosque is divided into two areas: one for prayer and one for study. On the ground floor, the prayer hall is adorned with brightly coloured Islamic domed prayer niches, intricately designed windows and walls decorated with Islamic symbols. The second floor, which is still under construction, serves as an educational centre. It features an auditorium, classrooms, and a library. The mosque also boasts a large courtyard, which provides shade for visitors. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
