Architecture:
The Al Ajyal East Mosque in Oman is an inter-faith worship space, designed to provide a space for Muslim and non-Muslim pilgrims and worshippers alike. The mosque extends horizontally across two domes, with a sculptural, five-part minaret rising 50 meters into the Omani air. The mosque is composed of two distinguishable elements: the building exterior and its interior. The exterior is an unembellished but beautifully blended composition of Omani limestone, glass and copper. The off-white, oil-encrusted limestone highlights the subtle gradients of copper detailing and bright emerald green windows, while also creating a reverent backdrop for the prayer hall’s main feature; the soaring minaret. The minaret is intricately detailed in gold and blue and spirals skyward in five staggered parts. It symbolizes the Islamic faith, and its carefully crafted terraces encourage contemplation for all. Internally, the mosque is divided into two halls for prayer. The lower level is designed for daily prayer and contains congregational rooms in which worshippers can perform ablution rituals. The upper level is an intimate space used for important ceremonial occasions and includes a raised mihrab. Decorative detailing can be seen throughout the mosque’s interior with intricate hand-painted calligraphy and geometric patterns accenting the polished limestone walls. The overall effect of this unified design gives the mosque a powerful sense of serenity and solemnity. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
