Hordabø Church is mentioned as early as 1130 CE in the Gulating law (Gulatingslovene), the old Norse law code of the Sognefjord district. According to documents from the Bishopric of Trondheim, it was the main church in the surroundings since the 15th century. The church burned down in 1723, but the people of the region rebuilt it in 1725, using the original materials wherever possible.
