Worship Method:

The worship method at the Phaung Daw U Pagoda in Pathein, Myanmar, is a unique experience that draws devotees from throughout the country. Each year, a festival is held at the pagoda to honor its four highly revered Buddhas in 'Boat Procession'. Devotees and visitors come to the pagoda to pay homage and pray for blessing. In the festival, five small, covered images of the four Buddhas are placed in a royal barge (carved wooden boat). Every day during the festival, the barge is taken on a tour of the numerous nearby villages, towns and cities in the Irrawaddy Delta region. The barge is accompanied by a fleet of royal barges with music, flags and banners, and colorful boats full of musicians and singers. As the boat procession passes through each village and town, people offer it flowers, incense and candles. At the end of the festival, the four Buddhas are enshrined at the pagoda permanently. During the enshrining of the Buddhas, thousands of devotees join in chanting and hymns. After that, a special ceremony called 'Kawakhon' takes place where the devotees make their offerings and gift items such as food, betel boxes, flowers, and incense to the four Buddhas. After the offerings are made, the devotees scatter around the pagoda to circle it three times, prostrating to the Buddhas each time. Phaung Daw U Pagoda (Pathein) is located in the city of Pathein in the Ayeyarwady Region of Myanmar. The best way to reach the pagoda is to first fly to Yangon, then take a bus or car to Pathein. From Yangon, the drive time is around 5 hours. Upon reaching Pathein, you can simply take a taxi or trishaw to the pagoda. You can also take a ferry ride along the Pathein River, from Pathein’s main pier to the pagoda.
