The Kyaik Ne Yay Lae Pagoda, also known as the Golden Rock Pagoda, is located in Kyaiktiyo, a town in the Mon State of Myanmar (formerly Burma). The pagoda is situated atop the Kyaiktiyo hill, 1372 meters above sea level, and is visible for miles around. A major Buddhist pilgrimage site, the pagoda is believed to hold a piece of the Buddha’s hair, and thus its believed to be one of the most sacred sites in the region. The pagoda itself is a 6 meter tall golden boulder, perched precariously on the edge of the hill and kept in place by a Buddhist monk’s hair. The boulder and its surrounding platforms were covered with gold leaf sometime in the mid 19th century, which gives it its gilded appearance. The site also features a number of smaller stupas and a shrine hall. On top of the gold plated boulder sits a small shrine dedicated to the monk who kept it in place with his hair. The pagoda is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year, many of whom make the 7-mile (11 km) journey from nearby Kinpun on foot. Worship Method:

Kyaik Ne Yay Lae Pagoda is located in the Kyaikmaraw Township of Mon State in Myanmar. People often worship at this pagoda by making several rounds around the main stupa while reciting prayers and offering flowers and incense. The stupa is said to represent the Buddhas enlightenment, and by fully circling the pagoda, it is believed that devotees are symbolically walking the Buddha’s path to enlightenment. As devotees make their rounds around the pagoda, they can be heard chanting the mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum.” The devotees inside the pagoda busy offering incense, flowers and food. They also light lamps and candles to create an atmosphere of prayer and devotion. At the end of the ceremony, the devotee offers numbers of monk robes, flowers and incense in honor of the Buddha.
