The temple is dedicated to Goddess Annapurneshwari, the incarnation of Mahalakshmi and the consort of Lord Shiva. Annapurneshwari is the Hindu Goddess of food, nourishment and fulfillment. It is believed that she has the power to provide food and fulfill every wish of her devotees. This temple is said to be originally built by the Chera King Kulasekhara in the seventh century AD and belonged to the Kerala Kingdom. It was later rebuilt by Udayavarma Raja in the 19th century.
