The idol at Ambalappuzha is likened to Parthasarthi with a whip in the right hand and a Shankhu (sacred conch) in the left. This temple is directly associated to the Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple. During the raids of Tipu Sultan in 1789, the idol of Sri Krishna from the Guruvayoor Temple was brought to the Ambalappuzha Temple for safe keeping. The payasam served in the Ambalappuzha Temple is famous among Hindu devotees. This sweet pudding made of rice and milk has an interesting mythological legend behind it. ,Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple is one of the most famous temples in Kerala. The temple has a long history and has been associated with religious worships for centuries. The temple follows the Pooja principles of traditional Kerala temples. In the morning, the ritualistic pooja or worship begins with "Gopuja, Gopanai pooja" which is the worship of Goddess Gopala or Gopinathan, the deity of the temple. This pooja is performed in a special pavilion facing east. Then, offerings are made to Sree Krishna, which includes incense sticks, flowers, fruits, coconut water, etc. This is followed by Abhishekam, a holy bath ritual to Sree Krishna, with distilled water mixed with sandalwood and flowers. After this, special rice flour-based dishes called prasadams are offered to the deity. The day of worship ends with a divine aarthi, a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony.
