It is believed to be the original seat (moolasthanam) of the Ananthapadmanabha Swami (Vishnu) temple at Trivandrum. It is the only lake temple in Kerala and is also known as Aadumala Shiva Kshetram. It is believed to have been built in the 8th century during the rule of the Mushika Dynasty. The temple is constructed in an island in the shape of a square, surrounded by a water body of the same shape. The deity installed in the temple is Sree Padmanabha Swami in the form of Karivaratham-Vigraha. According to legend, it was constructed by a native, Divakara Muni, in the 9th century.
