Brief History:

: The Jamaa El Fna Mosque is the oldest of the present day mosques in Marrakech. It is believed to have been built during the time of the founder of Marrakech, Sultan Youssef Ibn Tachefine, in the 11th century. The mosque was originally a simple prayer hall, but it was later renovated by Sultan Abu Inan Faris, who expanded it into a large complex comprising of a main prayer hall, a court of worship, a library, minarets, and four additional prayer rooms. Architecture:

The Jamaa El Fna Mosque is located in the heart of vibrant la Medina (the old city) of Marrakech in Morocco. It was built in the early part of the 11th century as part of the Almoravid Dynasty, under the patronage of the Caliph Yusuf ibn Tashfin. The building measures approximately 39 meters (128 ft) in length and 15 meters (49 ft) in width. It is rectangular in shape and has a courtyard filled with four porticoes facing the open plaza. The mosque's design is simple, and it features a large domed roof that rises over the main prayer hall. Adjacent to the main prayer hall is a minaret, or a tower for the call to prayer. The exterior walls are adorned with simple geometric patterns and the walls are made from stone and covered with white lime and red ochre. Inside, the main prayer hall has a lofty four-bay arcade with masonry arches and alternating banded vaults, which has been decorated with tilework. The walls, support by columns and arches, feature friezes of floral and geometric designs. An ornate rosette window is found in the centre of the mihrab (prayer niche), which is the focal point of the mosque. In the front courtyard, a covered fountain known as the watad serves as the ritual ablution area. The Jamaa El Fna Mosque is an important example of historic Moroccan Islamic architecture and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
