The Serbian Orthodox Church – Srpska Pravoslavna Crkva – is an Eastern Orthodox Christian Church. It is the largest faith in Serbia, and its influence extends throughout the Balkans and Central and Eastern Europe. The Church traces its roots to the 9th century, when it was the official religion of Serbia. Its teachings, rites, liturgies, and customs are based on those of the ancient Byzantine Church. The Serbian Orthodox Church is part of the 'Orthodox Church family. It has many autocephalous churches, including in Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, and Montenegro, as well as Greek and other Eastern Orthodox communities around the world. The Serbian Orthodox Church is headed by the Patriarch of Serbia, and its central body is the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It is divided into twelve dioceses, with six in Serbia and six abroad. The Church’s services include religious services, catechism classes, icon painting and restoration, and social assistance programs. It also runs children’s programs and maintains numerous monasteries throughout Serbia and beyond.
