Telšiai Cathedral In Lithuania is the most important cathedral in the Samogitian Diocese, one of the oldest churches in Lithuania and the largest Baroque-style church in the country. It was built in 1736–1756 by the Samogitian bishop Motiejus Valančius for the Uniate Church. It is also known as Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul or simply Cathedral of Telšiai. It is one of the best churches in Lithuania which you must visit.

History:

Motiejus Valančius, the Samogitian bishop, is credited with founding the Cathedral. He wished to create a bigger and grander church than the one existing by then, in order to demonstrate the power of Catholicism and to unite more people in religious faith. The construction of the Cathedral began in 1736, but the building was finished only twenty years later. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Lithuania.

The Cathedral stands in a 2,500 square meter area, surrounded by a wall. Its length is 73 meters and its width 61 meters. In 2006, the building was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List of “The Struve Geodetic Arc.”
