Panevežiuko Nukryžiuotojo Jėzaus bažnyčia In Lithuania: History,Facts, & Services

Panevežiuko Nukryžiuotojo Jėzaus bažnyčia is a church located in Lithuania, which combines two distinct buildings, the late Gothic and Baroque. Built in 1526 by the Grand Duke of Lithuania Algirdas on the site of an earlier wooden church, the Church was originally dedicated to Saint George. However, when the city of Panevėžys was taken by the Knights of the Teutonic Order in 1781, the church assumed its present-day form and shape and was dedicated to their patron saint – Jesus Christ crucified. Today, the Panevėžys church is one of the finest examples of late Gothic and early Baroque church architecture in Lithuania. It is also well-known for its wooden floor, a work of great craftsmanship dating from 1771. Inside the church, visitors can appreciate the beauty of its frescoes, many of which date back to 1737. Additionally, inside the church is the 600th anniversary memorial of Algirdas, Grand Duke of Lithuania, built in 1926. The Church is still an active place of worship, offering services in several languages.
