The church was built after a large fire devastated the city in July 1939. During the reconstruction process, the original plan to reconstruct the church was abandoned and a new firm was chosen to build the church instead. The first stone used for the construction of the church was blessed by Pope Pius XII in 1939. The construction of the church was disrupted several times during World War II. It was finally completed in 1947. The official consecration of the church took place in 1949. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Lithuania.

The Church is dedicated to the veneration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The main altar of the church is decorated with a mosaic of Saint John Fisher (1469–1535), who was also venerated within the Sacred Heart devotion. The high-roofed bell tower houses a large bell. The church is also home to a variety of religious artifacts including a painting of Saint Joseph that was blessed by Pope John Paul II. It also hosts the parish's weekly Masses on Sundays and Holy days of Obligation.
