The Benedictine Church of Saint Nicholas in Lithuania is an historic Catholic church located in central Lithuania's Vilkaviškis district. It dates back to at least the 15th century and is believed to have been built by members of the medieval Dominican Order. The church is one of the few surviving examples of Baroque architecture in Lithuania. It served as a center of Catholic religious life in the area until the mid-19th century, when it was heavily damaged by fire. It is one of the best churches in Lithuania which you must visit.

History:

The church building was probably built around 1486 by members of the Dominican Order, although the first written record of the church’s existence dates back to 1618. By the start of the 18th century, the church was part of a large Benedictine monastery. The monastery was destroyed during the Napoleonic Wars and the church was heavily damaged by fire in 1845-46. Subsequent repairs and renovations were funded by local noble families. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Lithuania.
