Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary In Latvia: History,Facts, & Services
The Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the largest Roman Catholic Church in Latvia and the oldest Catholic church in the Baltics. It was founded in 1590 and was the only place of worship for the Catholic minority in Latvia for centuries. The church building seen today is an early 20th century Art Nouveau style structure built on the ruins of the original medieval church that was destroyed in a fire in 1741. The church is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and holds regular Mass services, baptisms, weddings, funerals and other sacraments. The church also operates a charity to assist those in need. It is a member of the Ecclesiastical Province of Riga, a jurisdiction under the Archbishop of Riga.
