The Kuwait Zoo was established in 1969 by Sheikh Fahd Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, then Kuwait’s Emir. Initially it only had a few animals, since it was mainly used as a breeding centre. Over the years the zoo expanded its collection and in 1982 the first official building was constructed that currently houses bird enclosures. In subsequent years, the zoo acquired more and more animals representing different habitats of various continents, making it one of the most diverse zoos in the Middle East. In 1999, the Kuwait Zoo Forestry Department was created to conserve and protect Kuwait’s natural resources and wildlife. In 2008, the Kuwait Zoo opened the first dedicated African Safari Park in the Middle East. There are lions, cheetahs, hippos, rhinoceroses, and giraffes among many other animals.
