History:
The Arraya Tower is the tallest building in Kuwait, standing at 306 meters (1,004 feet). It was constructed between 2005 and 2010 as part of the Arraya Complex, owned by KGL Investment House, a Kuwait-based private equity firm. The tower was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the same architectural firm that designed the Burj Khalifa and the Petronas Twin Towers. The construction of the tower began in 2005 after KGL Investment House purchased the land from the Kuwaiti government through a government privatization program. The tower was meant to symbolize the unity and progress of Kuwait and its people, and construction was completed in February 2010 at a cost of around US$250 million. Upon its completion, Arraya Tower became the tallest building in Kuwait, surpassing the Kuwait Telecommunications Tower which stands at 247 meters (810 feet). The tower itself consists of 57 stories of commercial and office space, as well as a sky lobby, a shopping mall, and a health club. It is located in the Arraya Complex, which also includes residential apartments, a commercial mall, and a cinema. The tower’s concave form is based on the silhouette of the Kuwaiti dhow, a type of sailboat used in the country for centuries, symbolizing the link between the Kuwaiti people and their traditional past. The tower has earned several awards since its completion, including the Best Commercial Architecture Award from the Middle East Architect Awards in 2015 and the Iconic Building Award from the Construction Week Awards in 2014.
