The Kuwait Red Fort, or Shari Al Salem, is an iconic historical landmark located in Kuwait City. It was built in the late 19th century by Sheikh Mubarak Al Sabah, the 16th ruler of Kuwait. Although the fort is considered one of the most important landmarks and symbols of the city, it has a long and complicated history. The first historical record of the fort dates back to the 1860s, when Sheikh Mubarak Al Sabah and his son Sheikh Sabah Al Salem Ibn Mubarak Al Sabah called upon the Khazim tribes to build the fort. Construction of the fort began in 1876 and was completed in 1877. It was built for military and defensive purposes, consisting of two walls, a gate, four watch towers and several cannons. In the following decades, the fort continued to expand and was used by Sheikh Mubarak and his successors as a royal palace as well as a military base. In 1908, Sultan bin Saqer Al Qassimi of Kuwait was responsible for the rebuilding of the fort and the development of the Shari Al Salem district, where the Red Fort is located. During the First Gulf War, the Red Fort was heavily damaged by Iraqi forces invading Kuwait, and it was further damaged in the Second Gulf War.
