The American University of Kuwait (AUK) was founded in 2003 by a group of Kuwaiti investors inspired by a desire to create a world-class academic institution in the State of Kuwait. AUK started as a higher education institution offering undergraduate degrees programs with two colleges: Arts and Science. In 2006, the university was granted with accreditation from the Kuwaiti Ministry of Higher Education and it became the first private, non-profit liberal arts institution in the country.
