The Great Temple, also known as the First Temple, was built between 957 and 935 B.C.E. When the Temple was completed, it served as the central place of worship for the Jewish people, housing the Ark of the Covenant, considered to be the holiest possession of the Jewish people. The site may have been destroyed again by the Romans in A.D. 70, but evidence of the Jewish presence remains to this day.
