Palace Tomb In Jordan: History,Facts, & Services

Palace Tomb is a type of megalithic grave located mostly in the Mediterranean region, primarily in Sardinia, Corsica, and Sicily. Constructed between the mid-fourth millennium BC and the middle of the first millennium AD, palace tombs are rectangular structures built out of large, finely cut stone blocks, usually two or three storeys high. They typically feature a central passageway leading to one or several separate chambers. Palace tomb history dates back to the Neolithic period when people first began living in the Mediterranean area. At this time, burial practices focused mainly on natural burial sites such as caves and rock shelters, but over time, more elaborate funerary monuments were constructed in the form of palace tombs. Palace tomb facts reveal that these tombs usually had two or three levels, although there were some that had up to seven levels. Each level was decorated with carvings and symbols that suggested a hierarchical structure. They were often connected by steps and lintels. It is believed that these tomb structures indicated the importance of the deceased and the power associated with their lineage. Palace Tomb services may include the burial of the deceased, the placement of grave goods, and the “awakening” of the deceased, which was a significant part of Ancient Mediterranean religion. Grave goods have also been found inside palace tombs that suggest the importance of the deceased’s role in the social hierarchy.
