History:

The Princess Rahma Mosque is located in Sweifiyeh, Amman, Jordan. Its construction dates back to the late 19th century, when it is believed to have been built by Sharif Hussein bin Ali, the emir of Mecca (1837-1908) and grand shareef of Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. The mosque was built to honor his three daughters, Rif'at, Rahma and Zainab. In the late 1970s, what is now the Princess Rahma Mosque underwent extensive renovations sponsored by the Jordanian monarch, King Hussain. The renovation work included the installation of a new marble minbar (pulpit) and the construction of a new domed chamber. It also included new fountains for washing and wudu. The mosque, which is now open to the public, features an iconic blue tiled dome that rises above the city skyline and can be seen from miles away. The mosque is known for its unique style of art and architecture, which is inspired by the Arab revivalist period. It comprises an open courtyard surrounded by four covered prayer halls on each side.
