Mukawir In Jordan: History,Facts, & Services

Mukawir is a historic hill site located in the West Bank of Jordan, just south of the Sea of Galilee. It has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries for both Christians and Muslims. The site is believed to be the site of the murder of John the Baptist by the orders of Herod Antipas. Mukawir History Mukawir was originally constructed in the 4th Century CE as an administrative center by the Nabataeans. By the 8th Century, it was an important Christian center and was used to house a large church. As the political situation developed with the coming of the Muslims, Mukawir became a major pilgrimage site for Muslims and Christians as it has been associated with both religions. Mukawir Facts Mukawir is home to a fortress built by the Ottoman Empire in the 16th Century that is now used as an archaeological museum. Within the fortress are several underground chambers believed to date to the 2nd Century CE. Mukawir also has a spring and a pool used for baptisms by Christian pilgrims. Mukawir Services Mukawir offers visitors a variety of services such as guided tours, restaurants, and souvenir shops. There are also accommodations for visitors, including guesthouses and camping grounds. Mukawir also hosts several annual festivals celebrating its religious significance.
