History:
Al-Siq is thought to have first been used in the late 6th century BC during the time of the Nabataean Kingdom. This is when Petra was first established as the Jordan's ancient capital until the Romans arrived in 63 BC. The Siq takes its name from the Arabic word for ‘shaft’ or ‘chasm’ and was used by the Nabataean’s as the main entrance to the city. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jordan.

Al-Siq is an incredible feat of engineering. The 800m walkway is cut from the sandstone cliffs that line both sides of it. This soft sandstone is incredibly easy to cut and shape and is what gives Petra its unique and striking appearance. The Siq also has a large number of well preserved Byzantine era inscriptions and carvings on its walls.

Currently, Al-Siq offers several services and guides to those interested in visiting Petra. Park rangers and tour guides are available to help explain the history and significance of the site and take visitors on a tour of the Siq. Visitors can also take part in walking and camel tours, which offer amazing views of the canyon and the archaeological features within it.This beautiful church in Jordan has made a lot of significance in the past.
