Al-Siq is an ancient 800m (2,600ft) long walkway that leads to the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. It is the main entrance to the city and is lined on both sides by soaring 800m high sandstone cliffs, making it a spectacular sight. Al-Siq is known for its dramatic beauty and is often referred to as the ‘Grand Canyon’ of Jordan.

History:
Al-Siq is thought to have first been used in the late 6th century BC during the time of the Nabataean Kingdom. This is when Petra was first established as the Jordan's ancient capital until the Romans arrived in 63 BC. The Siq takes its name from the Arabic word for ‘shaft’ or ‘chasm’ and was used by the Nabataean’s as the main entrance to the city. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jordan.
