Romanian Orthodox Cathedral In Jerusalem is a Greek Orthodox church in the Old City of Jerusalem, located on Christian Quarter Road, in the Armenian Quarter. It was established in 1858 with the support of Prince Alexandru Moruzi and is dedicated to St. George. History The Romanian Orthodox Cathedral was established as a result of a need felt by a considerable number of the Romanian community in the region for a place of worship of their own. It was built by the Greek community in 1858, with the financial support of the then Prince or Moldova, Alexandru Moruzi. The building was renovated in 1891, and was then supplemented with the addition of an apse and an impressive dome. Later, in 1912, a bell tower was added to the facade completed the final version of the Cathedral. Facts The Cathedral is the oldest Romanian Orthodox church in the region, and is the only one of its kind in the old city of Jerusalem. It is one of the few Orthodox churches not to be built on a site previously occupied by another church, as most of them are built in places that have been sacred to Christianity for centuries. Services The Cathedral serves the Romanian community through the weekly Sunday services, during which the prayers are spoken in Romanian. It also offers sacramental services such as communion and confession for the community, as well as providing a place for special occasions such as baptisms, weddings, christenings, and funerals.
