The first church was built on the site in 1345 by Franciscan friars. The current church was commissioned by the Franciscan Father Pierre Lippomano in 1954 to replace the old wooden church, that had been erected in 1679. The church was designed in the shape of a teardrop to symbolize Jesus’ sorrowful tears. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jerusalem.
