Musashino Chapel Center is a historical chapel located on the grounds of Musashino University in Tokyo, Japan. The chapel was designed in the Neo-Gothic style and is the oldest building on the campus. It was built in the late 1920s and has served as a place of worship and cultural exchange ever since. History The chapel was first built in 1927 as part of the university’s campaign to promote international exchange between Britain and Japan. The design was modeled after the church of St. Giles Wren in Oxford, England. In 1939, partitions were installed inside the chapel to divide the space into two areas; one for use by Protestants and one for the Catholics which were originally housed in the nearby Tsukiji Catholic Church. During the 1920s and 1930s the chapel was often used to hold international lectures and events. Facts • The chapel was designed by Japanese architect Kudō Jinzaburō in the Neo-Gothic style. • It is the oldest surviving building on the Musashino University campus. • The chapel has been designated as an important cultural property of Japan for its historical and architectural significance. • During the Meiji and Taishō era, the chapel was used for weddings and religious services for both Protestants and Catholics. Services The chapel is open to the public and can be visited during visiting hours by prior arrangement.
