The Mosque of Al-Hussein is an Islamic religious site located in Aswan, Egypt. Built in the 11th century, it is a prominent example of Islamic architecture in the region. The mosque is built atop a large mud-brick platform, detailed with masonry and various geometric patterns in its exterior. The building proper is constructed mostly of wood, with a façade of wooden grilles, panels and carvings. It is roofed with domes and wooden shingles, and buttressed with stone towers. Inside, richly decorated columns and archways create a sense of grandeur. The ionic and Corinthian capitals, stained glass windows, and paintings on the walls and ceilings add to the rich aesthetic of the building. The courtyard at the back contains a reservoir, the source of ritual ablutions before prayer. The grand entrance in the front leads to an anteroom where supplicants await admittance. The main prayer hall, located just beyond the anteroom, is a large rectangular space filled with light and open to the sky. The walls are adorned with finely embroidered Persian carpets and an array of ornamental objects. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
